A vibrant chronicle of one of today's most notorious and revered live bands, Gogol Bordello Non-Stop follows Eugene Hutz's gypsy-punk brigade around the world as they spread their liberating libertine musical gospel. Filmmaker Margarita Jimeno tracks their raucous gigs from 2001 to 2006, from NYC to Italy, as the band rises from dingy basements to festival main-stages. The cast is a rotating circus of polyglot personalities from Israel, Russia and America, who dish on their music, their heritage, and their favored vices. Hutz, a sardonic mustachioed Ukrainian immigrant and the group ringleader, fuses his gypsy heritage with a love of punk rock and burlesque. Part carnival barker, social organizer, and poet, he's a mesmerizing presence on-stage and off. J.U.F. -- the "Jewish-Ukrainishe-Freundschaft" -- a configuration that combines the ethnic punk wilding of Gogol Bordello with the eccentricities and pulsing multi-culti groove of Eugene Hutz's DJ sets. Programmer Tamir Muskat provides a base for Hütz's outrageous multilingual vocals, samples of violins and accordions, the guitar of Oren Kaplan, and horns of Ori Kaplan; the songs draw on everything from Eastern European and Arabic influences, through gutter punk grit, to the urban electronica of Stereo MC's and the downtown chatting of Soul Coughing's M. Doughty. Don't bother putting this album on in the daylight, though. This is city music, made for what happens long after the midnight hour.

In the summer of 2004, on a car journey in Eastern Europe, Pavla Fleischer met and fell in love with Eugene Hutz, lead singer of New York's Gypsy Punk band Gogol Bordello. Captivated by his energy and his musical verve, and desperate to get to know him better, she decided to make a film about him. The Pied Piper of Hutzovina follows Eugene and Pavla on their subsequent road trip through Eugene's home country, Ukraine. It is the story of two people traveling together on two very different courses. Her aim is to rediscover a forgotten romance; his is to rediscover his roots. She hopes to find love on the road; he hopes to find musical inspiration from the gypsy culture he is determined to preserve. This is an intimate portrait of a filmmaker with a passion for her subject, and a punk musician with a longing to revisit his past. Theirs is a journey which tests their relationship and challenges their perceptions of the music they both love.
